This recipe is incredibly versatile and can be adapted to make any kind of spiced syrups you’d like! It’s incredibly simple, and once made will last in the fridge for about a month.
For any spiced syrups:
Ingredients
- 100g sugar
- 100ml water
- 1 tsp spice or flavouring of choice
Directions
1. Heat the sugar and water until dissolved, whisk in the spice, simmer gently for 2–3 minutes, then steep for 15–20 minutes and strain. Store in a glass container and keep in the fridge for best longevity.
This basic recipe will provide you with roughly 150ml of syrup, and can be used to make a number of syrups! Cinnamon, vanilla, lemon, you name it! In addition to the single teaspoon of flavouring, you can develop it a bit to get multi-dimensional flavours as well…
Varieties to Try
With such a simple recipe, there’s a lot of room for improvisation!! Some of my favourites include the following:
Pumpkin Spice Syrup
- 100g water
- 100g granulated sugar
- 1 cinnamon stick
- ½ tsp ground ginger
- ¼ tsp nutmeg
- ⅛ tsp ground cloves
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
Gingerbread Syrup
- 100g water
- 100g light brown sugar
- ¾ tsp ground ginger
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp nutmeg
- ⅛ tsp cloves
- ½ tsp vanilla
Vanilla Cinnamon Syrup
- 100g water
- 100g granulated sugar
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Apple Pie Syrup
- 100g apple juice
- 50g light brown sugar
- 1 cinnamon stick
- ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
- ¼ tsp ground ginger
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
Maple Cinnamon Syrup
- 75g water
- 75g light brown sugar
- 40g maple syrup
- 1 cinnamon stick
- ½ tsp vanilla
And many, many, MANY more!! Go crazy, worst you’ll do is make a syrup that’s kinda gross, and even then you can still throw it in a smoothie or a baked good for the sugar content.
Personally, the main use I have for these syrups is for mixing cocktails 😉 Just for inspiration, here are a few cocktails that I love to mix using the syrups mentioned in this list!
- Spiced Peach Martini (using cinnamon syrup)
- Vanilla Espresso Martini (using vanilla syrup)
- Lemon Drop (using lemon syrup)
- Pumpkin Spice White Russian (using pumpkin spice syrup)
- Gingerbread Espresso Martini (using gingerbread syrup)
- Vanilla Cinnamon Old Fashioned (using vanilla cinnamon syrup)
- Apple Pie Mule (using apple pie syrup)
- Maple Bourbon Sour (using cinnamon maple syrup)
And, of course, many more. The only limit is your imagination and your liver 🙂
Of course, these aren’t the only uses for your syrups!! They can also be delicious glazes on baked goods, creating a beautiful shine. They’re also great additions to overnight oats or Greek yoghurt to add some sweetness and flavour!
Whatever you end up doing with them, I hope you love them as much as I do! They’re so easy and simple to make, SO versatile, and having a cupboard lined with homemade syrups just makes me incredibly happy <3
